What is SEO crawler software?

SEO crawler software is a program that visits the pages on your site the way a search engine does—following links from a starting URL and recording what it finds. Unlike a human clicking through a sitemap, it doesn't get tired, and it doesn't guess. It builds a map of what's actually crawlable and then runs checks against that list: broken links, missing or duplicate titles, redirect chains, thin content, and dozens of other technical and on-page issues that affect rankings or user experience.

Why use crawl software at all?

Manual spot-checks are fine for a handful of URLs. Once you're past that, you need something that can scale. An SEO crawler will hit hundreds or thousands of pages in one run and hand you a single, structured list of issues. The catch is that list can be overwhelming. That's where prioritization comes in. Good crawl software doesn't stop at "here are 400 issues." It helps you decide what to fix first—for example with impact vs. effort, or a Top 10 and Quick Wins list—so you're not staring at a spreadsheet wondering where to start.

What a website crawler actually does

The core job is discovery: from one URL, the crawler follows links (within rules you set, like same domain or same subdomain) and builds a list of every page it can reach. Then it evaluates those pages: status codes, response times, meta tags, headings, internal and external links, and so on. The result is a snapshot of your site's technical and on-page SEO. Run it again later and you can compare—before and after a redesign, or month over month—so you can show clients or stakeholders exactly what changed.
